The Reclaimed Advantage
Why Choose Reclaimed?
Reclaimed lumber is not a compromise or a niche product. It is a premium building material that outperforms modern lumber in density, stability, character, and environmental impact. Here are six reasons builders, architects, and homeowners choose reclaimed wood.
Old-Growth Density
Reclaimed lumber comes from trees harvested decades or even centuries ago, featuring 15-30 growth rings per inch compared to just 4-8 in modern plantation timber. This density translates to superior hardness, better wear resistance, and floors and surfaces that last generations. The tight grain also makes reclaimed lumber more dimensionally stable, meaning less warping, cupping, and seasonal movement over time.
Unique Character
Natural patina, hand-cut saw marks, and weathering patterns give every board a story that no factory can replicate. The variations in color, texture, and grain that come from decades of use and exposure create visual depth that interior designers and architects specifically seek out. No two boards are alike, and that uniqueness is what makes reclaimed wood projects truly one-of-a-kind.
Environmentally Responsible
Every board we sell is diverted from a landfill. Choosing reclaimed reduces demand for new deforestation and cuts embodied energy by up to 75% compared to harvesting, transporting, and processing new timber. The EPA estimates that construction and demolition debris accounts for over 600 million tons of waste annually in the United States. By reclaiming and reusing structural timber, we keep valuable material in service and out of landfills.
VOC-Free Indoor Air Quality
Decades of natural off-gassing mean reclaimed wood contributes zero volatile organic compounds to your indoor air quality. New lumber, engineered wood products, and adhesives can off-gas formaldehyde, benzene, and other harmful chemicals for years. Reclaimed wood has already completed this process naturally, making it an ideal choice for homes, schools, restaurants, and any space where air quality matters.
Irreplaceable Species Access
Some of the species available in our reclaimed inventory are no longer commercially harvestable. American chestnut, wiped out by blight in the early 20th century, exists today only in reclaimed form. Old-growth heart pine from trees that grew for 200-400 years offers grain density and resin content that modern plantation pine cannot approach. Reclaimed lumber is the only way to access these materials.
Proven Long-Term Performance
Reclaimed lumber has already proven itself over 50, 100, or even 200 years of service in demanding structural applications. A beam that held up a barn roof for a century has demonstrated its resilience in ways that no laboratory test can replicate. This real-world track record gives builders and homeowners confidence that reclaimed materials will perform for generations to come.
First-Time Buyers
How to Buy Reclaimed Lumber
New to reclaimed wood? This step-by-step buying guide walks you through the process from initial project planning to delivery. Our team is available by email at info@boston-lumber.com to answer any questions along the way.
Determine Your Application
The first step in selecting reclaimed lumber is understanding how it will be used. Structural applications like beams and joists require specific species and grading. Decorative applications like accent walls and shelving offer more flexibility. Flooring has its own requirements for hardness, profile, and finish. Knowing your end use helps us recommend the right species, grade, and processing level.
Choose Your Species
Each species has unique characteristics in color, hardness, grain pattern, and workability. Heart pine is prized for its warmth and density. White oak is the gold standard for durability. Douglas fir offers excellent strength-to-weight ratio. American chestnut is rare and highly collectible. Cypress excels in moisture-prone environments. Our team can help you select the right species for your project goals and budget.
Select Your Grade
We grade all lumber on a four-tier system: Premium Select (minimal defects, uniform appearance), No. 1 (minor character marks), No. 2 (visible character with open knots and nail holes), and Rustic/Character (maximum weathering and patina). Higher grades cost more but offer a cleaner look. Lower grades cost less and provide more authentic reclaimed character. There is no right or wrong choice here, only what fits your design vision.
Specify Dimensions and Processing
Tell us the nominal dimensions you need, whether the material should be rough-sawn or planed, and whether you need custom profiles like tongue-and-groove or shiplap. We can also kiln-dry material to bring moisture content down to 6-8% for interior applications. The more detail you provide upfront, the more accurate our quote will be.
Calculate Your Quantity
Lumber is sold by the board foot (BF), which equals a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. Flooring is sold by the square foot. We recommend ordering 10-15% overage to account for waste, cuts, and any boards that may not work in your specific layout. Our team can help you calculate material needs based on your project dimensions.
Plan Your Timeline
Standard orders ship in 5-10 business days. Custom milling adds 5-10 business days. Kiln drying adds 7-14 days depending on species and thickness. Large orders or rare species may require additional lead time for sourcing. If you have a hard deadline, let us know upfront so we can plan accordingly and set realistic expectations.

Volume Discount Tiers
We offer tiered pricing to reward larger orders. Whether you are a contractor ordering material for a single renovation or a builder purchasing for multiple projects, our volume pricing ensures you get the best possible value. Our Environmental Commitment
Environmental Impact
Sustainability is not a marketing buzzword for us — it is our entire business model. Every product we sell is reclaimed from structures that would otherwise be demolished and sent to landfill. Here is a look at the measurable environmental impact of choosing reclaimed lumber from Boston Lumber.
Trees Saved Annually
Equivalent mature trees saved by using reclaimed lumber instead of new harvest
Landfill Diversion
Percentage of incoming salvaged material we successfully process and sell
Carbon Sequestration
Average CO2 stored per 1,000 board feet of reclaimed lumber kept in service
Energy Savings
Reduction in embodied energy compared to harvesting and processing new timber
Water Savings
Less water used in processing reclaimed vs. milling new lumber
Waste-to-Product Ratio
85% of incoming salvage becomes saleable product; 15% is recycled as mulch or biomass fuel
Fascinating Facts
Did You Know?
Reclaimed lumber has a rich history and some surprising characteristics. Here are a few facts that our customers find interesting.
A single reclaimed barn can yield 5,000-15,000 board feet of usable lumber, enough to floor a 2,000 sq ft home.
Old-growth heart pine has 3-4 times the resin content of modern Southern yellow pine, making it naturally resistant to insects and decay.
The American chestnut tree was functionally extinct by the 1950s due to blight. Every piece of chestnut lumber we sell was harvested before that era.
Reclaimed Douglas fir beams from Pacific Northwest warehouses are often 100-150 years old and were milled from trees that were 300-500 years old at harvest.
Using reclaimed lumber in a LEED-certified building project can contribute to credits in Materials & Resources (MR), Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and Innovation categories.
The oldest reclaimed beam in our current inventory dates to approximately 1780 and came from a post-and-beam barn in Vermont.
